On the move #1

02 Mar 2006

A regular round-up of staff changes within the industry featuring ROFIN/Baasel Lasertech, nLight and the WM Keck Observatory.

•  Armandroff takes over from Chaffee at Keck

Armandroff: privilege

Taft Armandroff will be the next director of the W. M. Keck Observatory. He succeeds Frederic Chaffee, who is due to end a second 5 year term as head of the Hawaii-based facility on 30 June this year. Back in 1996, Chaffee made it clear to the W. M. Keck board that he would be director for no more than a decade and is said to be thrilled that an astronomer of Armandroff's calibre will lead the observatory.

Armandroff is currently associate director at the National Optical Astronomical Observatory, US, and is also director of its Gemini Science Centre. "It is a privilege to be asked to lead such a dynamic and accomplished organization as the W. M. Keck Observatory," said Armandroff. "I am eager to work with its staff, the CARA board and the community of Keck astronomers to keep Keck at the forefront of scientific discovery."

•  ROFIN/Baasel Lasertech promotes marketing ace

Lötzsch: leading role

ROFIN/Baasel Lasertech, a subsidiary of ROFIN, has appointed Susanne Lötzsch as head of its marketing communications department. In her new position, she will be responsible for public relations and operational marketing in the laser micro field. A graduate in international business and culture studies, Lötzsch has worked for ROFIN / Baasel Lasertech's marketing division for five years.

•  nLight co-founder tackles emerging laser applications

Farmer: five year plan

Jason Farmer has been promoted to chief technology officer at nLight. A co-founder of the US firm, he has over 10 years experience in the photonics industry and holds several semiconductor laser patents. "Jason will now take on a broader role [at nLight]," commented Scott Keeney, nLight's CEO. "He will focus on the emerging applications for high power semiconductor lasers that will drive exceptional growth in our industry over the next five years."
