VISION Focus magazine - Autumn 2023 2023

Summer
Making a small adjustment to algorithms typically used to enhance images could dramatically boost computer vision recognition capabilities in applications ranging from self-driving cars to cybernetic avatars, researchers at Japan’s Riken University have shown. Unlike most artificial intelligence (AI) experts, Lin Gu from the Riken Center for Advanced Intelligence Project began his career as a therapist. This background gave him unique insight into scale variance—a critical issue facing computer vision that refers to the difficulty of accurately detecting objects at different scales in an image. Highlights in the Summer issue include:
  • Riken University achieves sharper computer vision for self-driving cars
  • Flinders researchers discover new low-cost material for thermal imaging lenses
  • Cognex sales subdued amid customer caution
  • Submerged lidar acquires 3D images underwater
  • SWIR imaging market ‘worth $2.9BN by 2028’, says analyst
  • NASA and ESA’s satellites help with Turkey, Syria earthquake response
  • Xaba and Rolleri Partner to develop a cognitive autonomous cobot workcell
  • automatica 2023: Basler to presents vision solutions for factory automation
  • Teledyne Technologies reports ‘record’ Q1 2023 results
  • Cognex launches In-Sight 3800 vision system

Summer 2023

Spring
Considering our colorful cover image of the cuttlefish eye, it’s not the first time that a high-tech solution has been inspired by Mother Nature and it certainly won’t be the last. Bioinspired optical structures can offer novel approaches to light processing along with new imaging capabilities, expanding the palette of tools available to optics designers. Insects and related species, sometimes dating from prehistoric times, have often provided the blueprints for the latest devices, with examples including the nanostructures based on the eyes of moths that can improve the anti-reflective properties of optical coatings, or the class of 3D camera partly inspired by the multiview vision of flies. - Read all about it on page 9. Additional editorial highlights:
  • EMVA celebrates 20th anniversary at EMVA Business Conference in Seville
  • AI detection package boosts embedded thermal automotive perception
  • SpectraWAVE intravascular imaging receives FDA premarket approval
  • Luminar signs ‘multi-billion dollar’ deal with Mercedes-Benz
  • Cuttlefish eye inspires improved vision for autonomous vehicles
  • Mastcam-Z sees details of Martian dust dynamics
