High intensity flash for freezing motion in ballistic applications | |

Specialised Imaging announce the SI-Monoflash – a new high intensity short duration flash designed to freeze motion in aeroballistic applications.
Evaluating the aerodynamic profile of a hypersonic projectile requires multiple ultra-high camera stations positioned along the flight path. To arrest image motion typically requires exposure time of just a few hundreds of nanoseconds’ duration.
Incorporating a short duration high-intensity illumination source into the testing set-up allows the use of standard off the shelf, self-triggerable single shot cameras. The SI-Monoflash spark source will emit a single high energy light pulse with a duration of typically 300ns. This single spark emission will freeze the motion of fast-moving objects.
The SI-Monoflash is designed use in a shadowgraph system, where the light is pointed at a retroreflective screen. The captured image will show air turbulence from edges and surface of the projectile as well as the Mach cone. This enables measurement of instantaneous velocities. The unit can be triggered from a signal TTL signal and be daisy chain together for power control and monitoring.
The SI-Monoflash is fully compatible with the current range of Specialised Imaging products including SIM series ultra-fast framing camera, Kirana high speed video camera and the TCAM shadowgraph camera.
