Knight Optical’s Germanium Windows for Gas Detection

Gas detection in Continuous Emission Systems (CEMS), combustion analysers and environmental monitoring are key to ensuring that the world we live in is monitored for its pollution, and the environments in which we work are safe to do so. Therefore, ensuring the internal components within these systems are of the highest quality is of utmost importance in such a potentially perilous industry.

Knight Optical provides several optical components suitable for gas detection systems; such as Interference Bandpass Filters, Front Surface Mirrors, Gas Cells, Singlet Lenses and Windows manufactured from Calcium Fluoride (CaF2), Silicon (Si), Quartz, UV Fused Silica, Magnesium Fluoride (MgF2), Sapphire (Al2O3) and Germanium (Ge).

Gases are detected at specific wavelengths, and all these components work harmoniously to identify the type of gas you are monitoring and the intensity of the gas:

Carbon Monoxide (CO) – 4.73µm
Nitric Oxide (NO) - 5.24µm
Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) – 7.42µm
Hydrogen Chloride (HCl) – 3.55µm
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) – 10.7µm.

Germanium (Ge) is commonly used within gas detection due to its exceptional transmission at over 45% between the 2-14µm – up to 45°C temperatures. An ideal substrate for detecting the gas wavelengths across the whole spectrum, our Germanium Windows are supplied as custom-made components to meet your precise specification or can be purchased online from our extensive stock range for quick turnaround times.
