Optical Fiber Cables from OFS | |
06 Aug 2013 Stringent requirements are a given for unmanned applications. OFS’ extensive fiber capabilities plus coating and cabling material options allow us to build specialty fibers into varied cable configurations including miniaturized versions. OFS Micro-Links (µlinx™) Optical Fiber Cables are designed for unmanned applications and combine high strength, very small size, excellent bend performance and abrasion resistance. These micro optical fiber cables have an outer diameter of only 0.8 mm, the thickness of a credit card, yet contain aramid strength members for enhanced performance in tactical applications. Two constructions are offered: µlinx Avionics Optical Fiber Cables for use in both manned and unmanned aircraft and µlinx Tether Optical Fiber Cables for use with unmanned ground vehicles. Both designs are available with single-mode, 50µm multimode, or 62.5µm multimode graded index optical fiber. µlinx Avionics Optical Fiber Cables µlinx Avionics Optical Fiber Cables are designed to offer optimal performance in the avionics environment where high reliability, light weight and high temperature performance are absolutely necessary. Weighing only 0.7 grams/m, the silicone/acrylate coated fiber is braided with aramid yarn for high strength and cabled with an ETFE jacket for abrasion and chemical resistance. The temperature range is -65°C to 150°C. This cable has passed the FAR 60° burn test plus flame, smoke, and toxicity tests as well as many other tests defined in ARINC 802. OFS has a long history of manufacturing fiber and cables for defense and commercial aircraft and recommends µlinx Avionics Optical Fiber Cables for communication systems on manned and unmanned aircraft. µlinx Tether Optical Fiber Cables Designed to perform in rough terrain this small but tough cable creates a reliable data link for unmanned ground vehicles. Constructed with acrylate-coated fibers followed by aramid yarn, the outer jacket is an abrasion resistant Hytrel® that makes for a cable that is both highly durable and flexible.
