Infrared Thermometers That Use an SMBus

08 Dec 2010

The miniature digital IR thermometers introduced this year by Dexter Research Center use a system management bus (SMBus). An application note is now available for introduction into the SMBus communications protocol. A step by step guide describes the communication with the temperature sensor module (TSM).

The TSM, which is 8mm in diameter, has an internal temperature resolution of 0.01K (calculated value). Using the SMBus, temperatures can be read out with a 0.02K resolution. For physical reasons, the repeatability in the temperature range from 0°C to 50°C is 0.5K. For narrower temperature ranges it is possible to achieve greater accuracy, and vice versa.
