Avalanche Photodiode with a Lightpipe Header - Making a Point with Light

11 Feb 2009

The SAR500 series Avalanche photodiodes are very sensitive across a wide spectral range – from 400 nm to 1100 nm – and are characterized by extremely low rise times.

The standard configuration of this series is now available with a “lightpipe header.” A small fiber with a core diameter of 200 µm (SAR500LP20) or 400 µm (SAR500LP40) has been integrated into the header of said TO-46 housing. Inside this housing the fiber ends a few µm above the surface of the detector. All light that is coupled into the fiber reaches the active area of the detector; signal loss is thus avoided. This allows the effective coupling of light into a fiber. Typical application fields of SAR500-APDs include rangefinders, communications, and any measuring system that offers a high degree of reception and sensitivity.
