Energy-efficient photonics technologies go on show in southern California at SPIE's annual Optics + Photonics event.
SAN DIEGO, California, USA -- 3 August 2010 -- New products for solar-energy generation, solid-state lighting, cancer-detection equipment, and more life-enhancing applications are being shown at the SPIE Optics + Photonics exhibition in San Diego opening this morning. The 225-company exhibition is the largest optics and photonics exhibition in Southern California.
The exhibition will run through Thursday at the San Diego Convention Center, and is held in conjunction with a major symposium on nanoscience and engineering, optoelectronics, green photonics including solar technology and new-generation lighting, and photonics.
New, high-tech BMW and Toyota cars are highlights in a special Photonics for a Better World pavilion organized by SPIE. The pavilion showcases consumer-level applications of photonics technology as well as several projects bringing energy-efficient lighting and cooking capabilities to the developing world.
Among the companies showing approximately 70 new products and applications are Konica Minolta Sensing Americas, Taylor Hobson, Veeco, Taylor Hobson, Breault Research Organization, Minus K, Lambda Research, and Imagine Optic. Product announcements are listed on the SPIE website.
A display in the exhibition hall of more than 100 vintage lasers and a photo tribute to the technology and its developers are part of the year-long SPIE Advancing the Laser: 50 Years and Into the Future celebration. The first laser was successfully demonstrated by Theodore Maiman on 16 May 1960.
Admission to the exhibition is free. Registration is in Hall B of the San Diego Convention Center.
The annual technical symposium held in conjunction with the exhibition draws research and technology experts from approximately 50 countries who will present nearly 3,000 papers on the latest advances in optics and photonics. Panel discussions on commercial prospects and a professional development short-course program continue through the week.
Earlier in the week, participants heard predictions of commercially competitive solid-state lighting with 20-25% great efficiency than current solutions by 2012, and progress at the National Ignition Facility toward sustainable fusion-generated energy.
