Date Announced: 12 Jun 2025
Jena, Germany – May 27, 2025 — piezosystem jena is proud to announce its latest achievement as its latest fast steering mirror technology has been selected as one of the 20 finalists for the Innovation Award 2025, out of more than 70 entries worldwide. The PSH 20/2 and PSH 35/2 tip-tilt systems were nominated for their technical excellence and impact under the category of optical information and communication/security.
The Innovation Award 2025, sponsored by Laser World of Photonics and Electro Optics, recognizes outstanding technological and technical advancements of newest additions of PSH series that shape the future of photonics. This nomination marks a major milestone for piezosystem jena and highlights its commitment to delivering ultra-precise, energy-efficient, and space-qualified solutions for the growing demands of optical intersatellite communication.
The PSH 20/2 and PSH 35/2 fast steering mirrors (FSMs) were designed to meet the demanding requirements of modern low Earth orbit satellite networks. These tip-tilt systems are driven by piezoelectric actuators and are capable of real-time beam steering with resonant frequencies up to 2,000 Hz and angular displacements up to ±22 mrad. Integrated with closed-loop strain gauge sensors, they provide ultra-precise control which minimizes hysteresis or drift.
Technical highlights:
The PSH 20/2 is designed for fast tilting movements with low energy requirements, while the PSH 35/2 with extended stroke and temperature tolerance offers a solution for precise tilting movements in demanding environments.
Both models allow biaxial tilting of the upper platform level with compensated thermal behavior - essential for applications with long-term stable beam position.
With their compact, lightweight design (230–250 g) and low power consumption, these FSMs offer ideal solutions for beam stabilization in space-constrained and power-sensitive environments. Their compatibility with vacuum and ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions make them especially suited for advanced space communication systems. Moreover, these systems are also suitable for lap or production environments, such as the applications of the semiconductor tools.
Recently, the PSH 20/2 and PSH 35/2 have been officially featured by the European Space Agency (ESA) as a part of their SQATTS (Space Qualified Tilting System) project. This recognition proves that PSH systems meet ESA’s stringent space qualification requirements, while also ensures its practical viability in current and future satellite communications applications.
As the industry moves toward faster, more secure, and interference-free satellite networks, piezosystem jena remains committed to innovation and excellence—aiming to lead the next era of space communication.
Suitable controller with ILC technology
The recommended NV 200/D NET controller delivers 400 mA peak current, 16-bit resolution and a noise level below 0.3 mV. The available interfaces are Ethernet, USB-C, SPI and analog. The PiSoWorks software supports Iterative Learning Control (ILC) - this allows the speed of open control loops to be realized with the precision of closed control loops, with repeatable input signals.
