Sturbridge, Massachusetts, US – OFS, a leading manufacturer of innovative fiber optic products, has announced forty years of optical fiber production in its Sturbridge, Massachusetts facility. Founded initially as SpecTran in early 1981, the company's vision was that of an integrated supplier of optical fiber and cable in both the data communication and telecommunications markets.
Founder, CEO and Chairman, Dr. Raymond E. Jaeger was the driving force in growing the business in the early years and still resides in Sturbridge.
In 1994, SpecTran acquired Ensign-Bickford's Specialty and Optical Technologies business in Avon, Connecticut, to add that specialty fiber portfolio to its multimode fiber offerings at Sturbridge.
In 2000, Lucent Technologies purchased SpecTran for its Optical Fiber Solutions business and made significant investment in manufacturing capacity in both Sturbridge and Avon. In 2001, Lucent Technologies sold its Optical Fiber Solutions business to Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd.
Today, forty years after its origin, the Sturbridge facility, operating as part of OFS, is a leader in multimode fiber technology with world-class optical fiber draw technology and engineering systems backed by the technical strength of OFS Laboratories. More than 100 employees at Sturbridge focus on serving customers in the data center space and supporting 'the cloud' on college, medical, and industrial campuses with 10Gbit/ second data transmission speeds over LaserWave® Multimode Optical Fiber.
