Date Announced: 30 Sep 2015
Video and image processing expert will lead journal beginning in January.
SPRINGFIELD, Virginia, and BELLINGHAM, Washington, USA -- Professor Karen Egiazarian of Tampere University of Technology in Finland has been named editor-in-chief of the Journal of Electronic Imaging (JEI) starting 1 January 2016. The journal is published by the Society for Imaging Science and Technology (IS&T) and SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics.
The Journal of Electronic Imaging publishes papers in all technology areas that make up the field of electronic imaging including technologies involved in the design, engineering, and applications of electronic imaging systems.
Egiazarian succeeds Professor Gaurav Sharma of the University of Rochester, who has served as editor-in-chief since January 2011.
"I'm proud to take note of Professor Egiazarian's appointment as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Electronic Imaging," said Craig Olson, SPIE Publications Committee Chair. "The myriad authors, editors, readers, and staff of JEI will all benefit tremendously from his long experience in serving the electronic imaging community. In addition to being a recognized expert in video and image processing, he has contributed significantly to both the society and the field as a conference organizer, presider, and author. I think his close ties to both conferences and publications will prove greatly beneficial in steering JEI into its next phase."
"We are extremely pleased that Dr. Egiazarian will assume the role of editor-in-chief of JEI. We believe that his years of experience in electronic imaging research and education -- along with his contribution to JEI as an associate editor -- prepare him well to lead a publication that is such a key resource for the electronic imaging community. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Sharma for his dedication and skilled leadership," said Susan Farnand, IS&T Publications Vice President.
"I would like to thank the boards of directors of both IS&T and SPIE, as well as JEI's current editor-in-chief Gaurav Sharma, for supporting my candidature and choosing me to represent JEI as editor-in-chief starting in 2016. It is a great honor for me. I'm convinced that we can further increase the prestige of JEI, achieving top scientific recognition and boosting the Science Citation Index ranking of the journal," Egiazarian said.
Egiazarian received an MSc in mathematics from Yerevan State University in 1981, a PhD in physics and mathematics from Moscow State University in 1986, and a DTech from Tampere University of Technology (TUT) in 1994. He is a professor in the Department of Signal Processing at TUT, leading the computational imaging group. He has published more than 600 papers in the fields of image and video processing and applied mathematics. He has also authored and co-authored four books and is a co-founder and CEO of Noiseless Imaging Ltd., a TUT spinoff company.
Egiazarian has served SPIE and IS&T in various capacities, including service as an associate editor of JEI since 2000, and chair of the Image Processing: Algorithms and Systems conference series within the Electronic Imaging Symposium since 2002. Egiazarian is a recipient of IS&T's 2014 Service Award.
