Kopin Receives Production Order for High-Brightness SXGA Displays to Support Color Helmet Mounted Display Product Line for Pilots

Date Announced: 01 Jun 2015

First Microdisplay Qualified in Aviation Color Helmet Mounted Displays.

WESTBOROUGH, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Kopin® Corporation (KOPN), a leading developer of innovative wearable computing technologies and solutions today announced it has received a production order for high-brightness color SXGA displays (>5,000 fL or ~17,000 nits) in support of full-color helmet-mounted display (HMD) products for US Navy’s MH-60 helicopters.

“Achieving the high brightness levels required for aviator’s HMDs is extremely challenging and our SXGA color display is the first microdisplay to enable the use of full color symbology in aviation HMD applications,” said President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. John C. C. Fan. “In addition to a production order for our monochrome SXGA displays for use in the Joint Strike Fighter (F-35) HMD that we announced in April of this year, this new production order for our high-brightness full-color SXGA displays is a further testament to the quality, performance and reliability of our display products.”

Kopin’s full-color SXGA (1280x1024) is a 0.97”-diagonal active matrix liquid crystal display utilizing 15μm pixels to provide ultra-high brightness levels over the entire military operating temperature range. The display is used in conjunction with Kopin’s low-power A252 ASIC and a high-brightness backlight to provide a reliable, all-solid-state display solution without the concerns for image burn-in or life-time issues commonly found in other solutions. Compared to monochrome green symbology, color symbology provides pilots with increased situational awareness and shortened reaction times in response to major threats and extreme aircraft conditions.

“Kopin displays have become the microdisplay of choice for augmented-reality applications where high brightness is required to provide color symbology that is easy to read in full sunlight conditions,” stated Bill Maffucci, the Company’s Vice President of Government Programs. “Our displays provide industry-leading brightness levels which are significantly higher than competing technologies, allowing pilots to maintain situational awareness in extreme operating environments.”
