Production of VCSEL devices first requires the deposition of a complex sequence of compound semiconductor material layers - a process known as epitaxy, in which IQE specializes. The company works with partners including Philips Photonics, who in turn supply the finished VCSEL chips and modules to customers now including some major consumer electronics firms. Apple used VCSEL arrays for the first time in its flagship iPhone X model, with others expected to follow suit in the near future. Higher-power versions of the technology are also envisaged as an option for lidar systems in future autonomous vehicle navigation units. Photo: Philips Photonics. |
