William Borucki, the first principal investigator for the Kepler mission. Borucki, who also worked on the Apollo mission, led the experimental efforts that proved both front and back-illuminated CCD sensors would provide the necessary precision required to find Earth-sized exoplanets. Before retiring in 2015, he also built a $1M end-to-end simulation of the technology needed to accomplish the detection of Earth-sized transits. Photo: NASA Ames. |
