LZH and Neolase are working together to develop a laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) system capable of operating at submarine depths of up to 6 km. Such a system will be able to locate and quantify mineral deposits on the ocean floor non-destructively - meaning that suitable sites could be mined in a more focused and less disruptive manner.
