First cast: the ELT main mirror's segments
The first hexagonal segments for the main mirror of ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), shown here being cast by the German company Schott at its facility in Mainz. These segments will form the 39-meter diameter main mirror, which will comprise 798 segments in total when completed. The ELT will be the largest optical telescope in the world when it sees first light, currently scheduled for 2024. Photo: Schott/ESO.
