LIGO test mass
Hough's pioneering work has ultimately led to 40-kilo "test masses" such as this mirror, installed as part of the LIGO equipment upgrade that resulted in the first few direct observations of gravitational waves. Another upgrade, currently taking place, should improve precision further, enabling more frequent observations of black-hole collisions and other cosmic phenomena during the next test run starting later this year.
