Captured by researchers at the RIKEN-MIT Center for Neural Circuit Genetics, the red sections in this image indicate severe amyloid plaque formation in the brain of a 9-month-old mouse with Alzheimer's disease. In humans, positron emission tomography (PET) scans are used to detect brain plaques, but an optical alternative that can access retinal plaques through the eye could offer major advantages.
