The 'Tadpole' galaxy, one highlight of Subaru's first major data release, is shown here at visible and near-infrared wavelengths. The galaxy is more than 400 million light years from Earth, and has the distinctive feature of an enormous trail of stars, itself approximately 300,000 light years in length. Astronomers think that the trail resulted from a collision with a second galaxy around 100 million years ago. Image: NAOJ. |
