At just 0.65 meters the aperture of the BlackGEM telescopes is tiny - by ESO's standards - but the array of astronomical equipment will be able to react very quickly to any indication of a gravity-wave signal picked up by LIGO and Virgo, and search the southern sky for optical evidence to pinpoint the exact location of a neutron-star collision, spinning supernova or similarly cataclysmic event.
