Carotid stenosis is usually diagnosed by an ultrasound scan of the carotid arteries in the neck, but the technique has moderate sensitivity and specificity, and yields many false-positive results. The new approach with photoacoustics promises to differentiate between high-risk and low-risk plaque formation, although it will first need to prove its utility in a clinical trial.
