| This image, taken earlier this month, shows the huge optical cell for the mirror subsystem that will feature at the heart of the LSST. The cell had just been treated for stress relief, relaxing stresses built up during welding that could lead to warping over time. According to LSST, the stress-relieving process lasted about 24 hours and consumed 1200 gallons of propane with temperatures reaching up to 1050 degrees Fahrenheit. Photo: LSST. |
