Because only the two LIGO interferometers are currently able to detect gravitational waves, the precise location of their source can only be estimated. But once the Virgo facility in Italy is up and running - which is anticipated during the forthcoming run by an upgraded LIGO starting later this year - astronomers should be able to triangulate the source position with much greater precision.
