Neural activity recorded from neurons in the brain of an awake mouse.
The white traces show the time course of neural activity recorded from a population of neurons in the brain of an awake mouse. The traces overlay an image of the recorded neurons taken with a two-photon optical 0microscope. The neurons contain a calcium sensor molecule that produces changes in fluorescence in response to changes in calcium ion concentration produced by action potentials. The time course of these fluorescence changes thus produce an optical measure of the time course of neural activity.
