Curiosity's tunable laser spectrometer actually features two different diode sources. An interband cascade (IC) laser built in-house at JPL is used to access the key methane absorption line at 3.27 microns. A Herriot cell is used to pass the laser through the gas sample more than 80 times - meaning that lower concentrations in the parts-per-billion range can be measured. Credit: NASA JPL. |
