GaN-on-silicon: overhyped?
While silicon substrates certainly have the potential to make LED lighting more competitive, Lux Research believes that the technical difficulties involved in dealing with the lattice mismatch with the light-emitting semiconductor layers largely outweigh the potential cost benefits. This image shows a GaN-on-silicon LED make by UK-based Plessey Semiconductors, which believes that the mismatch issue can be overcome through the use of strain-compensating layers of material.
