The first image produced by the ALMA telescope is a new view of two colliding spiral galaxies previously captured by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). In this composite image, responses from twelve ALMA antennae were combined to yield the red, pink and yellow elements - showing clouds of cold, dense gas from which stars will form. The blue detail here shows the image captured by HST, revealing new-born stars in the galaxies. Credit: NASA/ALMA. |
