| Photonics researchers have long known about the potential for microlens arrays and cameras inspired by the evolution of insect eyes, as seen on this dragonfly. The trend towards high-resolution cameras in smart phones and the complexity of the optical systems needed means that wafer-level production of "insect eyes" could soon become a reality, likely benefiting vendors of high-performance production tools in Europe.
