Inspired by nature
Photonics researchers have long known about the potential for microlens arrays and cameras inspired by the evolution of insect eyes, as seen on this dragonfly. The trend towards high-resolution cameras in smart phones and the complexity of the optical systems needed means that wafer-level production of "insect eyes" could soon become a reality, likely benefiting vendors of high-performance production tools in Europe.
