| The Desertec concept is to use the natural solar and wind resources of the desert to generate electrical power that can be exported to areas of much higher populations density via high-voltage grid. The vision remains at the conceptual stage for now, and in the Mediterranean region would require the construction of an entirely new power transmission architecture - at a cost of at least €400 billion, according to an early estimate.
