Aeolus: better wind data for weather and climate models
Aeolus is the first space mission to acquire profiles of the wind on a global scale. The near-real time observations are already being used to improve the accuracy of weather and climate prediction, but the mission team is keen to improve the collection of weak scattered laser signals to provide better vertical wind resolution. That is likely to require better lasers, optics, and detectors, with Teledyne e2v now contracted to work on the latter. Photo: ESA/ATG medialab.
