Once completed, the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) will sit on top of Cerro Armazones, at an altitude of 3046 m in Chile’s Atacama Desert. The Covid-19 pandemic halted work on ELT's foundations in July 2020, although it is hoped that works could restart early in 2021. 'First light' for the giant observatory, which will have a 39 m-diameter primary mirror, is now anticipated in November 2026. Credit: ESO. |
