Quantum encryption
Quantum repeaters are needed to extend the range of quantum-encrypted networks for long-distance secure communications. The maximum distance possible without a repeater is typically limited to around 100 kilometers, although work by a team at Toshiba Research Europe, part of the UK quantum communications research hub, has shown that significantly longer distances are possible.
