Polishing for precision
The exacting optical requirements of the world's next-generation observatories are achieved in part by extensive polishing of telescope mirrors. This image shows mirror segment two of the GMT's primary collector optic being polished at the Caris Mirror Laboratory in Tucson, Arizona. That polishing stage was recently completed, and the giant component is now being prepared for shipment to the GMT site in Chile. Photo: University of Arizona.
