Organic solar cells based on cheap-to-produce polymeric materials could potentially become a very large market in the long term, but at the moment the technology is limited by low conversion efficiencies and production of only small-scale active cells. US-based Konarka and Germany's Heliatek each claim to have produced cells operating at 8.3% efficiency, and UK start-up Eight19 recently received financial backing. Credit: Eight19. |
