sCMOS vs CCD
Scientific imaging remains the one stronghold of CCD technology, where its higher fidelity and sensitivity is highly valued. But when a high frame-rate response is needed for high-speed imaging, the serial read-out nature of a CCD means that a trade-off is inevitable. Proponents of scientific CMOS technology, which was introduced in 2009, say that these trade-offs can be overcome. Credit: Andor/PCO/Fairchild Imaging.
