| Despite their inherent stealthiness, submarines are something of a weak link in the era of so-called "network-centric warfare", which relies on covert, high-speed communication between the various elements of a fighting force. That's largely because sea water blocks RF signals. Systems based on blue lasers could provide the solution to that problem, and are set to be deployed by the US Fleet for tests in mid-2012.
