Cadmium, one of the banned substances under the RoHS directive, is still used in filter glasses thanks to temporary exemptions. Peter Hartmann from Schott wants optical glass taken out of the scope of the directive altogether - as has been achieved for cadmium-containing photovoltaic panels - and points out that being melted and bound into in a glass matrix is actually the best way to take lead and cadmium out of bioavailability.
