An on-board laser ceilometer, shown being cleaned at Misawa Air Base in Japan. A laser ceilometer is a device used to measure cloud height, thickness and vertical visibility. Applications in Earth observation are expected to be one of the key sectors driving the uptake of mid-infrared sources in the coming years. Credit: USAF.
