Including news from Melles Griot, IQE, Intense Photonics, Optical Surfaces and more.

  • Melles Griot, a global supplier of photonics products, has purchased the facility housing its laser manufacturing operation as well as adjacent space in which to relocate its photonics components group in the second quarter of 2002. The total operation, based in Carlsbad, US, now consists of 21 000 square meters.

  • Optoelectronics start-up Intense Photonics has teamed up with fellow UK company IQE, a III-V wafer specialist. The partnership involves the design, modelling and growth of complex compound semiconductor crystal structures that will be used in the photonic integrated circuits produced by Intense.

  • UK-based Optical Surfaces, a specialist in large optics, is to supply the South African Astrophysical Observatory in Cape Town with a set of high precision optics. This will include an aspheric plate, concave spherical mirror and a field flattener lens that will enable the researchers to acquire spectra from stars in a shorter time than available currently.

  • Finland-based Heptagon has raised EURO 1.5 million of venture capital funding to support the rapid growth of its micro-optics business over the last 12 months. This funding will allow the company to ramp up production of its diffractive and refractive optics in the coming year.

  • PHS MEMS of France, a manufacturer of micro-electromechanical systems, has established a subsidiary in California, US. Thierry Touchais, president of PHS MEMS said: "This will lead to numerous opportunities and allow synergy between Europe and the US. This step is vital for PHS MEMS expansion."

  • Fiber-optic giant JDS Uniphase has acquired the optical transceiver business of IBM. In a deal worth USD 100 million, IBM has also received 26.9 million shares of JDS Uniphase common stock and subsequent payments of up to USD 85 million in cash or stock may be made depending on the performance of the acquired business.
