Australian-based spin-off takes a birds-eye view of optical sensing.
Optics scientists at Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) have just formed a new company, Optical Engineering Associates. Based at the CSIRO labs in Melbourne, the spin-off aims to drive airborne sensing forward.
The scientists have focused on the design and manufacture of optical systems for civil and defense applications. Collaborating with an earlier CSIRO spin-off, Integrated Spectronics, the team has developed an airborne sensor called HyMap.
Installed on a light aircraft with an air-camera port, the sensor measures the wavelengths of visible and infrared light that are reflected from various terrain. By using Integrated Spectronics's electronics systems to process the spectral data, the sensor creates thematic maps of the earth's surface.
"These systems have proven to be sensitive yet cost-effective tools," said Wilson. "[They are typically used] for geological mapping, mineral and oil exploration and environmental surveys."
Wilson believes that there is a rapidly growing market for these sensors in the mining industry. The team has already worked with diamond explorers De Beers and mineral miners Anglo American, and is currently developing advanced sensors for the Australian Defense Department. However, Wilson is eager for the new spin-off to "open its doors to more international customers on a commercial basis."
