Coherent regroups to form two new divisions

17 Jun 2002

Laser systems manufacturer Coherent, of Santa Clara in the US, is to rationalize its corporate structure. The four existing company divisions will be replaced by two new ones.

The Coherent Photonics Group will merge the activities of Auburn, Laser and Semiconductor divisions, under the leadership of John Ambroseo.

The departing chief of the Semiconductor Division, Vittorio Fossati, will head up the newly formed Coherent Telecom-Actives Group (CTAG).

CTAG is charged with the responsibility of bringing optically pumped semiconductor devices to the market, and the development and acquisition of new active telecoms technologies.

President and chief executive of the company Bernard Couillard said: "The creation of the Photonics and Telecom-Actives Group is a result of our commitment to focus our efforts and speed up the development of our key initiatives in electro-optics, including telecommunications."

Coherent's Finnish fabrication facility in Tampere will provide epitaxial wafer growth for the two new sections.
