Philips expands into new areas of the globe

The Business Group Display Components groups of Philips Components Division will build a new picture tube technology center in the Czech Republic that will employ around 1000 people. The company is investing approximately 200 million Euro in the new project and the center will be in Hranice.

Construction for the new facility is expected to start in the second quarter of 2000 and should be completed in the second quarter of 2001. The center is expected to produce around 2.5 million large and jumbo sized TV tubes per year. Philips will be the first company to build jumbo color picture tubes in Central and Eastern Europe.

  • Philips has also announced this week that it will open two research laboratories in China. The laboratories, to be sited in Shanghai and Xian, will join the existing laboratory in Taiwan to become Philips Research East Asia. They will employ up to 200 Chinese scientists and will build up collaborations with major universities in China.
