Philips Display Components will restructure its picture tube manufacturing facility in Germany to focus on its new Cybertube family of products.
Cybertube displays are designed for digital interactive television, home cinema viewing and the Internet. Philips says that they give a higher picture quality than can be produced by conventional tubes because they have a very high line scan frequency (up to 38 kHz for the standard 100 Hz model, while a 48 kHz model is also available). These tubes also give a very flat picture by combining optically corrected glass and modulating the distance between the three electron beams as they are scanned across the screen.
"We're following a market trend to wide screen television," said Peter Halmans, the Global Marketing Communications Manager of Phillips Display Components.
The Aachen, Germany, factory will produce the "Cybertube Real Flat" tubes, both the 28-inch and 32-inch Widescreen (16:9) and the 32-inch Jumbo (4:3) tubes. The production of the 28-inch 4:3 tubes will cease at the Aachen factory in June and is being consolidated in Dreux, France.
