JDS Uniphase buys lithium niobate-based component maker

JDS Uniphase has announced the acquisition of Ramar Corporation this week, the latest addition in its quest to the dominate the optical component market.

Ramar will be integrated into the JDS Uniphase modulator business, which produces lithium niobate modulator components for the telecommunications industry. The larger company expects the addition of Ramar to add technical capabilities to its 10 and 40 gigabit lithium niobate modulator product development activities.

Ramar hopes that the resources of JDS Uniphase will enable faster times to market and higher performance with the lithium niobate technology. The terms of the latest acquisition were not disclosed.

In recent months the company, itself the result of a recent merger between JDS Fitel and Uniphase, has also bought AFC Technologies and announced plans to buy Epitaxx.
