Hughes Global Services, PanAmSat Corp., and the Australian Defence Force are combining to provide communications services to the Australian Defence Force through a satellite formerly used by the U.S. Navy. Leasat 5 has been relocated to 156 degrees East longitude and will provide ultrahigh frequency satellite communications service to the ADF for five years. PanAmSat, which owns the satellite, will monitor and control the altitude and orbital position of the satellite and control its communications payload while Hughes, which built the satellite, will help provide communications needs.
