3dcd has sold an exclusive license to use its 3-D i.d holographic security band to Microsoft, which will use it as an authentication, anti-piracy feature on CD-ROMs. The holographic security band puts a hologram on the inner ring of the CD and will be used in conjunction with a Microsoft-controlled, restricted international supply chain. Microsoft will have worldwide exclusive use of the security band in 1998 and semi-exclusive use in 1999. The 3-D i.d band will initially be used on CD-ROMs used to supply OEM sales to system builders but Microsoft may use it on consumer products as well.(courtesy Holography News)
