The United States Postal Service's Board of Governors has approved funding for optical character reader modifications to 812 flat sorting machines. Currently the FSMs used by the Post Office are only able to operate in an automated mode for barcoded mail, with non-barcoded mail requiring operation in a manual keying mode and thus a requirement for separate mail streams for the two types of mail. The modifications will allow the FSMs to automate processing of all flat mail, regardless of whether barcoding is used.
