COSE outlines future of the optics industry

17 Jun 2002

More than 60 leaders of the optical community, representing science, engineering, and industry, met to discuss the industry's future at SPIE's Annual meeting in Denver this month. Seven members of the executive board of the Committee on Optical Science and Engineering (COSE) fielded questions from the diverse gathering. Dr. Charles Shank, COSE Chair, outlined the objectives of the committee and explained the process used to gather information for the Committee's report.

COSE panel members included Chuck Shank, Chair, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab.; Dennis Killinger, Univ. of South Florida; Robert Byer, Stanford Univ.; Arthur Guenther, Sandia National Laboratories; Gary Bjorklund, Optivision, Inc; Thomas Deutsch, Massachusetts General Hospital; and John Greivenkamp, University of Arizona.

The COSE report is in the final stages of writing and is due to be published in early 1997 after a review process is conducted by the NRC. COSE is sponsored by DARPA, NIST, and NSF through the National Research Council of the National Academies of Science and Engineering.
