Continued deployment of fiberoptic networks is pushing the consumption of fiberoptic modulators and switches to ever higher levels. According to a study by the ElectroniCast Corp. (San Mateo, CA), by 1999 the North American consumption of fiberoptic switches will increase to $25.19 million, growing an average of 84% annually from the 1994 value of $1.18 million. Over the subsequent five years, growth will taper off to a still healthy 39%, with the total market rising to $132.53 million by 2004.
A second study by ElectroniCast predicts that the market for modulators will grow from the 1994 value of $27.5 million to reach $65.7 million by 2004. Phase modulators will make up the fastest-growing market segment, expanding from 43.5% to 63% of the modulator market over the period of the study.
