The concept of a virtual manufacturing corporation was tested this week when Sandia National Laboratory and about 10 other electronically linked institutions simulated making a metal part from start to finish. Every step in the process-- from design to prototype production -- was completed using powerful computer links. Data was transmitted to a General Motors plant in Pontiac, Mich., where the experimental part was made. The test illustrates how time and money can be saved by using new electronic techniques, said researchers.
